League of United Latin American Citizens and others brought the Consent Decree to court. Florida State Board of Education, August 14, 1990. The LULAC argued that Florida State Board of Education was not providing sufficient resources for English learning students. Consent Decree, as it is called, requires all teachers in Early Education and Elementary Education to be ESOL-endorsed. The decree also demands that all ELL-students be placed where they can receive help with their limited English. It has also had a positive impact on the teacher’s competencies, as it teaches them about cultural differences. It helps the teachers to better deal with English language learners in their classrooms. This helps to create the best possible environment for learning.
LULAC’s action is a good example of advocacy because it saw that ELL students were not receiving enough support. LULAC stepped in to fill the void of lack support by helping these students. Students who have difficulty with the language are now provided with a classroom where a teacher is available to assist. They can also improve their overall performance at school. Students who are ELLs no longer have to be held back because of biased exams. They can excel in class. Multicultural education aims to achieve this. Multicultural education aims to make sure that all students are included in the classroom and can excel.
You must complete 60 hours ESOL and TSL 4080 if you are a math education major.
These courses include ESOL-Applied Linguistics, ESOL-Cross-Cultural Communication, ESOL Curriculum and Materials, ESOL Methods of Teaching, ESOL Testing and Evaluation. The courses include ESOL-Applied Linguistics (Applied Linguistics), ESOL-Cross-Cultural Communication (Cross-Cultural Communication), ESOL-Curriculum & Materials, ESOL-Methods and Materials, and ESOL-Testing & Evaluation. UCF students are required to complete a TSOL Notebook containing the 25 ESOL Performance Curriculums as well as ESOL fieldwork.
The ESOL Infusion Model is a model which consists of two courses. These courses are Theory and Practice of Teaching Second Language Acquisition and Theory and Practice of Teaching an ESOL. A TESOL Journal is the required final product for demonstrating competencies.
Exercise #2
In the United States, white American culture is “dominant”. This type culture is often a Christian group with European descent. The dominant culture is white. The term dominant means that the majority of people are white. White privilege is the term used to describe this. White Americans are the most dominant speakers of English in the United States.
A micro-culture refers to a social group with distinctive values, behaviors, and traits that differentiate them from dominant cultures. Because these people share distinct characteristics, they are often seen as minorities. They have fewer resources than dominant cultures because they are treated as minorities. It affects the intelligence of students and their ability to continue in education.
The language issue is one of the most important diversity issues because it is an integral part of culture. When it comes to growth and development, communication is crucial. People who are unable to communicate often fall behind. Racism has had a major impact on linguistic and cultural groups. In the high school where I attended, we had what was called “walls”. Blacks would stand on one wall while hispanics stood on another. The entire courtyard was divided based upon color and belief. The school does everything possible to integrate the students, even though the “walls”, as they are called today, still exist. As different clubs and groups of students come together, they are able to overcome these “walls.”
Bilingual education can be controversial, as teaching another language is seen to undermine the American culture. Bilingual education is controversial as it can be costly and divert money from other resources needed in the classroom. The “self fulfilling prophecy” is a stereotype that is often used to describe ELL students. Teachers may have low standards for ELLs and this leads to students not performing as expected.
Cultural competence is the ability to understand and respond to different cultural and economic structures (Cushner McClelland & Safford 2009). Cultural competence to me is the ability to understand and recognize different cultures, and to be able teach effectively to all students regardless of their culture. Avoid stereotyping. Participate in diversity workshops and trainings. Help students understand their cultural identities.
Activity #3
Participate in a physical activity like running, walking, or swimming.
My ethnic heritage is a mixture of many different cultures. I am primarily Italian, Polish, German. My parents, grandparents, and I were all English-speaking first. My grandparents speak a few words of Italian and polish but neither is fluent. The only language my family knows is English. In consequence, I don’t get to experience many cultures. Because I only learned English and only understood English, my knowledge of the language is not very rich. My high school latin class helped me better understand language and identify many roots. The latin roots of many Spanish words help me understand the language. The main thing that has improved my ability to use language is the latin roots.
I am monolingual. I only understand and speak English. I consider this a big disadvantage. Spanish is an important language in America and it is growing more prevalent. It is an obstacle to my career as a teaching assistant, and I may lose out on some opportunities if I cannot speak or comprehend Spanish.
Yes, English is the language that should be declared official in the United States. English has long been our national language, dating back to 1776. Our country would suffer if we changed English to another official language. It would take a long time to teach everyone a new language and that would set us back. English has been the predominant language spoken in America for many decades and should remain our official tongue as long as this continues.
My accent is always changing. I am currently able to say that my accent is typical American, but I was born and raised in Kentucky. During these years, I was still learning words and new information. As a result, I developed a slight Southern accent. While I’ve mostly lost this accent (I only use slang like y’all rather than you all), I never felt that anyone treated me any differently. My friends might say that I sometimes use words in a funny way, but my southern accent is not something that has affected me.
One friend is the exception. My best friend speaks Vietnamese fluently. My best friend is Vietnamese and speaks it fluently. They never say anything to me when they talk in Vietnamese. In this case, I could use some basic Vietnamese knowledge to better understand the conversation. However, because of my unfamiliarity with the language, I cannot follow what is being said. It’s fortunate that most of my friend’s family speaks English.
